Citrix XenDesktop 5.6 on Hyper-V 2008 R2 with SCVMM 2012 - Part 1

Introduction

n this multi-part series of blog posts, I will deploy Citrix XenDesktop 5.6 using Hyper-V 2008 R2 and System Centre 2012 as the virtualisation platform. I won't go into a lot of detail on how to install each component and I won't include a lot of screenshots because it just isn't necessary, there is plenty of next, next, finish involved. If you are following along with this and you get stuck, please post a comment and I will promptly reply.

This is not designed to be a best practice deployment, it's designed to be a full-featured lab deployment. It will probably help those getting started with XenDesktop more than those that have been using it for a period of time. There will also be some useful Hyper-V and System Centre components in the procedures.

Infrastructure

The environment, when complete, will consist of:
  • A Windows Server 2008 R2 Server running the Hyper-V role – Because it is a single-server deployment, I'll be using the GUI. If this were a larger deployment, the decision made here would be different. Hyper-V Server or Server Core would have to be considered as an alternative
  • A Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory Domain Controller, also running DNS, DHCP and KMS
  • A SQL Server 2008 R2 Database instance that will be used for all SQL Server instances
  • A SCVMM 2012 Server for managing Hyper-V and giving the Desktop Controller something to chat with
  • A Citrix XenDesktop Controller that will also run Web Interface and Desktop Director and a Citrix Licensing Server
  • A Citrix Provisioning Services Server
  • Various Windows 7 Guests (Pooled, Dedicated, Existing, etc.) with various applications installed
  • A few Windows 7 Master Images
  • A NetScaler VPX (free version) for remote access
